Site Preparation

The Step That Makes or
Breaks Your New Lawn.

Here's something most sod companies won't tell you: the sod itself is the easy part. What happens underneath — the removal, the grading, the soil work — is what determines whether your lawn thrives for years or dies in months.

We see it constantly. Homeowners who paid someone to slap new sod over old grass, skip the grading, ignore the drainage, and call it done. Six months later the lawn is dead, the yard is uneven, and they're paying someone else to rip it all out and start over.

We don't do it that way. Every project starts with complete removal of dead grass, weeds, and debris — then precision grading, drainage correction, and soil conditioning before a single roll of sod goes down. It's more work. It takes longer. And it's the reason our lawns last.

What's Included

Everything We Do Before
a Single Roll Goes Down

This is the work that separates a lawn that lasts from a lawn that doesn't. Every step is included in our standard site prep process.

Dead Sod Removal

We strip all existing sod — dead, dying, or overgrown — down to bare soil using sod cutters. Everything comes out clean, right down to the root layer. No remnants left behind to interfere with new growth.

Weed & Root Stripping

Weeds don't just grow on top — they root deep. We clear all weed growth, invasive runners, and residual root systems so nothing competes with your new sod for water, nutrients, or space once it's installed.

Full Debris Haul-Off

Every bit of removed material — old sod, weeds, rocks, roots, construction debris — gets loaded up and hauled off your property. We never pile it in a corner, push it to the fence line, or leave it for you to deal with.

Precision Grading

We grade the entire surface to create a smooth, even plane that slopes away from your home and any structures. This eliminates pooling, prevents foundation issues, and gives new sod a flat, consistent base to root into.

Drainage Correction

Low spots that hold water, areas that flood after rain, sections where water runs toward the house instead of away — we identify and correct all of it during grading. Proper drainage is the single biggest factor in long-term lawn health.

Soil Conditioning

Florida's sandy soil doesn't always give new roots what they need. We amend and condition the top layer so it retains the right amount of moisture, provides nutrients, and gives sod the best possible environment to establish quickly and deeply.

Site Prep FAQ

Common Questions About
Dead Grass Removal & Site Prep

Not sure what's involved or why it matters? Here are the questions we hear most.

Can you just lay new sod over my existing grass?

We won't, and you shouldn't let anyone else do it either. Laying new sod over old grass traps moisture, prevents root contact with the soil, creates pest habitat, and almost always leads to a dead lawn within a few months. Full removal is the only way to do it right.

How long does site prep take?

For most residential yards, site prep — removal, grading, and soil work — takes a few hours to a full day depending on yard size and how much correction is needed. Larger properties or sites with significant drainage issues may take longer. We'll give you a clear timeline during the consultation.

Do you haul away all the old material?

Every bit of it. Old sod, weeds, roots, rocks, construction debris — it all gets loaded up and removed from your property. We never leave piles in the yard, push material to the property line, or ask you to handle disposal yourself. It's included in the quote.

Do I need site prep if my yard just has bare dirt?

Usually, yes. Even bare dirt needs to be properly graded for drainage, leveled for an even surface, and conditioned so new roots can establish. Raw construction sites especially need grading work — builders grade for the house, not for the lawn. We'll evaluate your specific situation during the free consultation.

Can I hire you for site prep only, without sod installation?

Yes. If you just need dead grass removed, the yard graded, or the soil prepped for a project you're handling yourself, we can do that. Most clients pair prep with a full sod install, but we're happy to scope a prep-only project if that's what you need.

Why does site prep matter so much?

Because it's the foundation. Bad prep means poor root contact, uneven surfaces, standing water, pest problems, and sod that dies within a year. Proper prep — full removal, correct grading, soil conditioning — means roots establish fast, water drains right, and your lawn stays healthy for years. It's the difference between paying once and paying twice.
